Hallmarks

Where possible we endeavour to accurately identify the hallmarks on the pieces in our collection. The ages of many of our pieces mean they may have partially or completely lost their hallmarks through resizing, polishing or even general wear over the years. Many antique pieces do not have any hallmarks having been produced before hallmarking was compulsory (see Pre 1950s exemption, as stated in the Hallmarking Act).

In the United Kingdom, the standards of fineness for gold and silver have changed over the centuries and differ internationally. The precious metal content nowadays is expected to be 9 carat, 14 carat, 18 carat and 22 carat. The 9 carat fineness hallmark was only introduced in 1854 along with hallmarks for 12 carat and 15 carat respectively - in 1932 the latter two were cancelled and replaced with the familiar 14 carat fineness.

The below chart is the official Dealer’s Notice issued by the British Hallmarking Council, please do refer to it but bear in mind that it does not include older precious metal fineness details.
